There was a time, not that long ago, when I would say that something like this could never happen. Now I am not that sure. I would hate to think that something like this could happen. Think about it, the character is what you are voting for, but the person behind the curtain, or in this case in the van, is who is truly in power. I don't know about you, but this is something that rubs me the wrong way. Just like in the episode, the person who embodies the character is replaced with bureaucrats, people who weren't elected, and the people who voted, had they known, probably wouldn't have voted for the character.
What this episode does a very good job at doing is pointing out the obvious problem with some of the people in government. They all play politics. Some of these people don't campaign on what they truly believe, they campaign on what they think will get them elected. They say things they think people want to hear and they take positions that are politically advantageous.
Now for the questions!
Do you believe this makes a joke out of current politics?
Would you elect a Character over a person?
Could you think of a good reason to do this?
Is there a bad reason for doing this?
Please include the Why!
