This was an episode that hit a little too close to home. with how dependent our society is on social media it is not so hard to envision our society operating entirely on your social media rating. That is exactly what this dystopian thriller does!
Welcome to America 2024, where everything we do is directly related to how others view us and rate our interactions. Everything, from the job we have, the house we live in, loans we are able to get, and even the vehicles we are able to rent, right down to our social circle and who we interact with is governed by our social media rating.
Meet Lacie, who desperately wants to be able to get her dream home. Unfortunately, her rating is only 4.2. A 4.2 out of a possible 5.0 isn't that bad, pretty good in fact, but Lacie needs a 4.5 or above to be able to get her dream home. Instead of boosting her credit score, Lacie must boost her rating. Lacie starts to work with someone to do just that when an opportunity of a lifetime lands at her feet. She is asked to be the Maid of Honor at her childhood friend's wedding, this is just the thing to skyrocket her rating right where she needs it to be. Unfortunately, this sets her on a downward spiral as she desperately tries to make the wedding where her rating plummets to next to nothing.
I know this may seem like the worst thing that can happen when Lacie ends up in a jail cell right across from a guy who seemingly had something similar happen to him, but it isn't. The story concludes with the pair throwing insult after insult at one another in a truly invigorating way. Where the two of them were no longer concerned with getting a good rating and not being forced to be fake and put on a happy face. Where they can, for the first time in their lives, be free to be who they are, or at least a version they have never been able to explore.
Now, on with the Questions
With our dependency on social media, do you think this type of society is very far off?
How fake would you have to be in order to be able to have the things you want in life?
Would you be able to be that fake? Assuming you had to be fake.
Imagine being free from such a system for the first time in your life, would you give a similar tongue lashing just because you could, without fear?
Please include the Why!
Comments are always welcome!
